The Manager, UX Design leads a team of Product and Visual System Designers in providing best in class user experiences for CarMax's digital experiences. The Manager will recruit, manage, and develop a team of Product and Visual System Designers, to translate business strategies into world class online experiences that are grounded in consumer truths. In partnership with Product, Strategy and Engineering, the Manager will ensure the UX Design team is progressive, efficient and highly engaged; providing creative methods of interpreting customer perspectives.The Principal Product Designer is responsible for translating complex consumer and business needs into a shared strategic vision that is industry-leading and brand-defining. Working alongside the UX Design Director, you will help to define the Experience Architecture for large complex products and product groups, impacting not just a single product team but end-to-end customer and associate journeys.A product team accelerator and enabler, you will also need to drive collaboration, create unifying frameworks and make recommendations based on consumer research, service design best practices and competitive insights. In partnership with Product, Strategy, Data Analytics and Enterprise Architecture, you will help to establish the principles and practices that result in more cohesive and scalable products and experiences.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:• Lead product design vision for customer or associate segments across channels, touchpoints and technology stacks, i.e. Azure and SalesForce• Work across cross-disciplinary teams to provide thought leadership and create frameworks to identify experience and capability gaps, as well as areas of future innovation• Communicate solutions to stakeholders and executives in a manner that simplifies complexity, generates excitement and delivers on our strategic commitments• Lead and develop user experience research plans to understand consumer and associate needs, translating these needs into actionable insights and future innovation opportunities• Collaborate (and lead/facilitate collaboration) with Product Managers, Product Designers, Engineers and Enterprise Architects, utilizing service design best practices• Stay current on all the tools, principles and practices in product design, prototyping and development, and drive for continuous improvement• Mentor and train junior members of the design team on industry and CarMax best practices in design strategy and workshop facilitation• Advocate for high standards of excellence in providing delightful and rewarding customer experiences, and proactively support the team in achieving them• Drive and champion the vision and standards for CarMax's UX practice owning and impacting the design of our end-to-end product experiences through team and individual contribution.QUALIFICATIONS:Passion for technology and design, as well as the drive to stay on top of industry trends and best practices• Effective communicator - able to explain complex or intangible concepts to stakeholders at all levels• Good listener - weighs input from multiple perspectives when forming opinions and recommendations• Collaborative and team-oriented work approach• Solid understanding of customer-centered design processes and ability to balance customer needs with business goals in developing solutions• Experience facilitating brainstorming sessions and service design blueprint sessions among a large, diverse group of stakeholders• Experience conducting and leveraging user research and service-design methods• Strong UX Design principles and deliverables, including rapid prototyping, site maps, information architecture, user personas, wireframes, flows, etc.• Ability to convert ideas quickly into design frameworks• Strong critical thinking and analysis skills• Able to train and mentor others in UX design methodologies and best practices• Experience designing solutions for web, mobile, and tablet applications• Experience with Agile development processes• Mobile Responsive/adaptive design experience a must• Omnichannel retail experience a plusEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:• 8+ years of experience within the field of user experience, user research and/or service design• 3+ years leading cross-disciplinary product initiatives• BA/BS degree• MA a plus• Portfolio/use-case based work examples showcasing your ability to create strategic frameworks that resulted in driving business outcomes and value to the customerTECHNICAL SKILLS:• Have an advanced understanding of:• web technology• design thinking principles• prototyping methods and tools• customer-centered design methods• data analysis• advanced facilitation and presentation methodsWork location is flexible if approved by the Company except that position may not be performed remotely from Hawaii or ColoradoAbout CarMaxCarMax disrupted the auto industry by delivering the honest, transparent and high-integrity experience customers want and deserve.
