About this job
The Principal Engineer position is a key contributor in information technology infrastructure and shared services that may include responsibilities in the following areas; data center and disaster recovery sites, physical and virtual appliances, servers, wireless, local area / wide area networks (LAN/WAN), telecommunications equipment, automation development and life cycle, network and automation troubleshooting, as well as project delivery and lifecycle.
The position is responsible for the review and development, design, implementation, automation, maintenance, and support of all projects within the environment(s). The position will be responsible for ensuring that infrastructure development meets CarMax® quality expectations and requires an excellent team player, highly qualified to lead multiple large projects and organize priorities and tasks.
It also requires top technical knowledge of infrastructure systems, networking, and related technologies / equipment.
The position is the driver of system performance, development standards, quality expectations, support, technical implementations, and all other aspects of the environment. The position should act as a consultant to leadership, other engineers and customers. It involves an extensive breadth of knowledge about the business processes supported by the team.
What you will do - Essential Responsibilities
Infrastructure Methodology and Support:
  • Works closely with Leadership to continuously evolve architecture of systems and roadmap strategies
  • Champion of the methodology by demonstrating ownership of all aspects of lifecycle management
  • Passionate support & ownership of all areas of the environment
  • Consistently mentor others in the production of all artifacts required of an engineer
  • Knowledge of current technologies and maintains an awareness for changes in technology and/or industry best practices
  • Proactively anticipates problems in service and equipment within the infrastructure / network and provides solutions
  • Development of complex infrastructure solutions
  • New infrastructure deployment and migrations
  • Effectively estimate time required for related technical efforts for projects of all sizes and ability to deliver multiple complex solutions
  • Evaluate platform performance; recommend and deliver improvements to increase productivity and reduce cost
  • Plan, coordinate and execute change management activities
  • Evaluates the ROI of and enhancements to the environment and effectively weighs the financial alternatives involved with various technical solutions and proposals
  • Assist in the budget process to identify the Total Cost of Ownership
  • Ability to perform 24x7 on-call support as required
Technical Expertise:
  • Build, design, and analyze simultaneous infrastructure projects and networks throughout the environment
  • Responsible for reviewing and mentoring the successful work of others in evaluating the business objectives, developing user requirements and generating technical specification for all projects within the environment
  • Ability to engage in critical support situations and effectively, efficiently, and quickly drive to a successful resolution
  • Proven experience leveraging existing networking technologies and elimination of redundancy in designs throughout the environment
  • Experience in leading and delivering multiple large projects involving the definition, selection, and implementation of enterprise tools, technologies and processes
  • Establishes level of service standards and operating procedures for overall system availability and individual components
  • Knowledge of current and emerging industry technologies

Qualifications and Requirements
General
  • 12+ years of Networking
  • 4-year degree in IT related course of study or equivalent work-related experience
  • Demonstrated project management ability leading multiple medium to large sized project teams
  • Advanced knowledge of infrastructure development concepts and techniques and the ability to communicate those concepts to all team members including patterns in the areas of security, scalability, usability and automation
  • Ability to create, review and analyze network designs and effectively communicate the rational behind the designs
  • Analyzes existing network and equipment and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Ability to interact with and direct the tasks of outside consultants in a professional manner while driving to successful project completion
  • Demonstrated ability to compare alternative approaches to meet objectives while assessing risk both quantitatively and qualitatively
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility while managing multiple priorities
