As a litigator, performs all duties expected of a Senior Trial Attorney. Works with Director and HR in the identification, selection, and development of a quality staff. Directly supervises Senior Trial Attorneys, Trial Attorneys, and support staff in a staff counsel office, dealing with both litigation and operational issues. Works with the Director and Audits & Standards to ensure that the staff counsel operation is providing quality representation to the insured clients and is meeting the company's needs and standards. As an experienced litigator, you will manage attorneys in various states, while maintaining a partial caseload. In particular, you will… What You'll Do: Directly manage other attorneys who may or may not be in the same state, including development, recognition, motivation and other matters as required. Provides legal consultation to staff counsel attorneys and to Claims on significant litigation matters. Provide formal and informal performance reviews for other associates, and communicate with Human Resources on connection with any pertinent concerns. Handle a partial caseload, consistent with management responsibilities, of moderate to substantially complex matters representing insureds or Sentry up to, and including, through trial. This will involve handling of pleadings, motions practice, depositions, written discovery, expert witness retention and discovery, dispositive motions ,and trial with minimal oversight. Review case law and statutory changes to maintain current knowledge of the law and to foresee legal trends in assigned states. Work with and assist leadership on strategic planning and matters impacting the department. Communicate and report to client and claims associates on progress of litigation, strategy, and more. What It Takes: Juris Doctor Degree Minimum 10 years of related work experience, including extensive experience handling multiple dispositive motions, taking/defending depositions, trial experience as first chair or solo trial counsel, and retaining expert witnesses. Valid license to practice law, preferably in multiple states Demonstrated ability to deal with people where conflict and controversy exist Ability to self manage and operation autonomously. In the state of California, the salary range for this position, based on qualifications and experiences, is between $155,296 annually - $213,352 annually.
