Job Description

Linux Systems and Applications Administrator

We are currently hiring two Linux Systems and Applications Administrators to with the digital learning services for internal and external customers within a leading Higher Education organisation. The Systems and Applications Administrator will be supporting activities around services provided by, and integrated with, third parties, providing customer support for all Digital Learning services, including virtual learning, assessment and archive services, and legacy web services - liaising with customers and colleagues where necessary.

This is a permanent position, with a salary between £50,000 to £63,000 per annum (DOE). The role will be remote, with the requirement to be in the office around four times per year when needed.

The Linux Systems and Applications Administrator would monitor service delivery, identifying any Service Level exceptions and proposing and/or enacting appropriate mitigating actions, agreeing a work schedule with the System Administrator Manager and reporting progress against a schedule on a regular basis (at least fortnightly).

Essential Experience

  • Experience of developing dynamic (PHP/MySQL) web applications
  • Experience of providing service delivery
  • A sound knowledge of web technologies
  • Knowledge of LAMP or LEMP environments
  • Knowledge of the Linux command line (BASH)
  • Database administration and SQL development
  • Ability to diagnose application problems
  • Ability to proactively engage with customers, and have good written and verbal communication skills with persons of diverse background, including non-technical people.

Beneficial Experience

  • Experience of supporting web services
  • Knowledge of Cloud environments (Azure, AWS, etc) and cloud automation (Terraform, Ansible, etc)
  • Debian, Ubuntu knowledge
  • Understanding of Linux security mechanisms
  • Exposure to other scripting languages (Perl, Python, etc)
