Based in Williamsburg, VA, DataXstream stands as a proud and dedicated SAP partner with over two decades of experience. We are relentlessly focused on innovating, rebuilding, and perfecting the most robust and user-friendly Order Management software available for the SAP ecosystem. As we continue to grow our impact and our team, we're seeking passionate individuals to join us in shaping the future of enterprise solutions.

Infrastructure Engineer

DataXstream's IT Operations team manages the on-premises infrastructure that keeps the company running — a VMware virtualization estate of 200+ virtual machines, enterprise backup systems, and the server infrastructure underlying key business operations. The Infrastructure Engineer owns this stack day-to-day, ensures high availability, and partners closely with the IT Systems & Security Engineer to ensure no single point of failure exists across IT Operations.

This is a great opportunity for someone early in their infrastructure career who wants real ownership of a production environment from day one. You will work alongside experienced engineers, learn enterprise infrastructure hands-on, and grow into a role that is central to how DataXstream operates and evolves.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day administration of VMware vSphere, vCenter, and the 200+ VM estate — provisioning, patching, performance monitoring, and capacity planning.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication management — job configuration, scheduling, monitoring, test restores, retention policy, and backup health reporting.
  • Server infrastructure support alongside the Director of IT Operations — primarily Linux server administration, patching, and lifecycle management, with some Windows server coverage.
  • SUSE Manager (SUMA) — Linux patch management, configuration management, and software distribution across the server estate.
  • Storage management — monitoring and maintaining the underlying storage infrastructure (SAN/NAS) and ensuring adequate capacity.
  • Contribution to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) initiatives — working toward declarative, auditable infrastructure management for on-premises and cloud resources.
  • Participation in IT Operations on-call rotation for infrastructure incidents and emergencies.

Cross-Coverage Responsibilities

DataXstream is committed to eliminating single points of failure across IT Operations. This role is expected to develop working knowledge of the IT Systems & Security Engineer's domain sufficient to provide continuity during absence.

  • Basic Addigy MDM health monitoring and policy review — ability to identify and escalate issues.
  • Security monitoring triage awareness — ability to identify and escalate basic alerts using established runbooks.
  • Endpoint inventory awareness — understanding of the Mac fleet state and active lifecycle activities.

Must-Have Skills and Qualifications

  • Foundational understanding of virtualization concepts — exposure to VMware vSphere or vCenter in any environment (homelab, coursework, internship, or professional).
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery concepts; any exposure to Veeam is a plus.
  • Linux administration experience — servers at DataXstream are primarily Linux; comfort with the command line and terminal-based administration is essential.
  • Strong terminal skills — you are comfortable administering systems via CLI without relying on a GUI.
  • Familiarity with Linux patch and configuration management — any exposure to SUSE Manager (SUMA), Ansible, or similar tooling is a plus.
  • Basic Windows Server experience — a small number of Windows servers exist alongside the Linux fleet
  • Networking fundamentals: VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and basic firewall concepts.
  • Scripting ability — comfort writing Bash scripts for automation, task scheduling, and system administration is expected; Python is a plus.
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort working through problems independently.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and respond to infrastructure incidents.
  • Clear written communication — you document what you learn and what you change.

What We Value

  • Curiosity — you want to understand the platform, not just make the ticket go away.
  • Ownership — when something is yours to deliver, you see it through.
  • Communication — you keep customers and teammates informed, especially when things get complicated.
  • Growth mindset — every customer engagement teaches you something; you pay attention to those lessons.
  • Collaboration — you ask the team when you're stuck and you share what you learn.

Nice to Have

  • Any exposure to VMware Tanzu or Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with IaC tooling: Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent.
  • Exposure to Azure or SAP BTP cloud platforms.
  • VMware VCP certification, or active pursuit of it.
  • macOS familiarity — endpoints across DataXstream are macOS; awareness of the Apple ecosystem is a meaningful plus.
  • Homelab or self-directed infrastructure project experience.
  • Exposure to CAB or change process management — infrastructure changes have downstream impact; familiarity with structured change management or change advisory board processes is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian tools — Jira for task and project management.
  • Experience using company-approved AI tools to increase personal productivity and efficiency.
