Job Description

Christians Against Poverty are exclusively partnering with Robertson Bell to recruit a Financial Accountant role on a permanent basis. CAP is a Bradford based charity who provides free debt help and local community groups across the UK. Our free services, run with local churches, provide practical and emotional support and show people that there is always hope.

The finance department is going through an exciting period of transformation. This Financial Accountant role will lead the financial accounting team as we automate processes, implement and maximise new tech systems and develop better data and reporting capabilities. This role is responsible for the preparation, development and analysis of financial accounting information, financial statements, regulatory reporting, financial controls and managing working capital.

With a small donation and big faith, John Kirkby started Christians Against Poverty in 1996. Since then, CAP has rapidly grown its debt centre network and expanded its services to tackle the causes of debt and poverty too.

As well as CAP Debt Help, we now help people step into employment through CAP Job Clubs, help people get control of their habitual dependencies through Fresh Start and a brand new service, CAP Life Skills, to equip people to live well on a low income. Our vision is to bring freedom and good news to the poor in every community through a nationwide network of CAP projects.

The key duties of this role are as follows:

  • Preparation of the annual financial statements for the annual report.
  • Liaising with auditors and the comms team, providing any additional supporting information required.
  • Ensuring that the annual report is up to date each year with the latest financial reporting disclosures and requirements.
  • Responsibility for balance sheet reporting, capital expenditure, cashflow and restricted funds.
  • Responsibility for oversight of the financial accounting side of the monthly accounts process; train and supervise the Assistant Financial Accountant to take on greater responsibility for the preparation work.
  • Income accounting - streamlining how the charity records income on our accounting software, in particular aligning the analysis with that of the CRM software (Inspire).
  • Review income allocation accounting and budgetary treatment of expenditure items, providing steers and decisions where necessary.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of new financial reports and automation of processes, leading to better financial information and data analytics for all stakeholders.
  • Leading the team in prayer times and engaging with other spiritual activities as required.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Qualified or Part-Qualified as an Accountant (ACA,ACCA,CIMA or equivalent).
  • A minimum 3 years' experience within a finance/accountancy environment.
  • Experience of preparing statutory accounts
  • Ideally, experience of charity accounting.
  • Experience of managing cash flow and working capital o Experience of leading teams to meet key objectives or targets.
  • Preferably, experience of reviewing controls and processes and upgrading accounting systems.
  • The ability to give both verbal assent to and practical demonstration of Christians Against Poverty's Statement of Faith and Core Values.
  • The desire to actively participate in prayer and worship, whether individual, small group or corporately, as an expression of their own personal faith and in line with CAP's Statement of Faith.

Our Head Office is based in Bradford, but remote working is available for the right candidate.
