Job Summary
The Corporate Employment Counsel serves primarily as employment legal counsel, assisting the SVP Legal and the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) in providing legal assistance, consultation, advice, counsel and interpretation to management in responding to employee grievances and other legal actions filed by employees, former employees and applicants, including consultation involving immigration and naturalization, wage and hour regulations, employment security law, federal, state and local fair labor standard laws and FMLA and ADA compliance. (NOTE: A J.D. degree and good standing with at least 1 state bar are REQUIRED. This will primarily be a work from home position, with preference for candidates in the Midwest who could periodically come to our Madison, WI office to meet with other members of the team.)

Job Functions
Essential Job Functions
Serves primarily as employment legal counsel:
Makes recommendations to the SVP Legal and the CHRO for improvement of the companys policies, procedures and practices on personnel matters; frequently consults with SVP and CHRO on personnel matters.
Advises on and provides training to the organizations Human Resources, Benefits, and Payroll Departments on various employment law issues, including but not limited to wage and hour compliance, compensation, employee relations, immigration compliance, unlawful discrimination claims, leave of absence and accommodations, terminations, reductions in force, benefits, and personnel related subpoenas.
Serves as contact for the Human Resources Department for employment eligibility matters (i.e., I-9, E-Verify, Employment-based Visas, etc.).
Reviews and drafts contracts for the Human Resources Department, including separation agreements, retention agreements, benefit related agreements, and staffing agency contracts.
Reviews employment agreements for applicants and advises on the risk of hiring in light of non-competition and non-solicitation provisions; meets with applicants and hiring managers to discuss the same.
Manages and investigates charges of discrimination and other complaints filed against the company and represents the company in regulatory agency investigations and claims, including drafting position statements and responses to requests for information for charges of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and wage and hour claims.
Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation to ensure the companys compliance
Oversees and assists with employment litigation handled by outside counsel and by the in-house litigation team to cost effectively achieve results
Provides labor and employment counsel to the members of the Legal, Executive, Accounting and Human Resources Departments
Collaborates with the Human Resources and Legal Departments and the business to identify and mitigate potential areas of vulnerability and risk
Manages compliance initiatives, including coordinating and prioritizing issues according to business need, developing action plans, and implementing solutions
Develops, recommends and implements personnel policies and procedures, prepares and maintain the organization's Employee Handbook and other employment policies and procedures.
Performs additional projects/duties as needed

Required Knowledge and Skills
Solid knowledge and understanding of current business acumen.
Solid knowledge and understanding of customer service and intrapersonal best practices.
Additional Knowledge and Skills
Solid knowledge and understanding federal and state statutes, regulations and interpretations governing employment laws
Graduate Degree
Additional Education Requirements
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) Degree from accredited law school and membership in good standing in one state bar
Required Experience
1+ years of related experience.
Demonstrated experience with MS Office products.
Additional Experience Requirements
Experience with an emphasis on employment counseling at a law firm or larger in-house legal department of a regulated institution
Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, court decisions and policies
Demonstrated ability to analyze facts, evidence and legal documents
Demonstrated ability to express legal interpretations and conclusions of law, clearly and logically in oral and written form
Demonstrated experience providing guidance and decision making in ambiguous or difficult situations
Demonstrated experience conducting gap analyses and implementing innovative and efficient improvement initiatives
