The Optum communications associate director is a member of the broader Optum Care communications team and actively leverages Optum assets and success stories in support of the company's priorities. Specifically, the communications associate director creates and executes external communications strategies and tactics that elevate Optum's reputation and connections with media, local communities and other external stakeholders. This work is done in partnership with Optum Care market leadership, marketing, human capital and other key business partners to ensure close and consistent alignment with the company's overarching business goals and core values.

The individual must have a strong interest in and understanding of the health care system and desire to be part of an organization that is committed to helping make health care work better for everyone. Working closely with the Optum Care business, s/he will serve a broad range of clients, including executives, providing consistently high levels of proactive support, strategic thinking and execution.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Working closely with the senior director of Optum Care communications, consult and partner with stakeholders to develop and execute external communication plans that effectively engage key stakeholders and influencers, amplifying the unique value Optum Care delivers to the patients it serves
  • Strategically support, guide and enable individual care practices and medical groups in advancing their communications and reputation priorities in the communities they serve
  • Effectively manage issues and crisis communications as needed at the local and national levels, collaborating with business and functional partners to respond appropriately and effectively
  • Establish and enforce quality standards and protocols that ensure consistently exceptional, high-quality work product, including all written materials and messaging generated by the team
  • Proactively seek out and promote new avenues for external communications efforts or improve current efforts
  • Collaborate consistently and effectively with communications leaders, business leaders and colleagues across UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, actively supporting cross-enterprise external communications priorities and initiatives
  • Use quantitative and qualitative measurement/evaluation processes to assess the effectiveness of communications (e.g., media placements, audience reach, etc.)
  • Manage external communications projects, including gaining required approvals and monitoring proper implementation (e.g., leadership, legal or compliance requirements, role assignments, timelines/milestones, budget management, issue tracking, deliverables)
  • Evaluate external communications programs and processes; identify lessons learned and recommend changes for future campaigns based on results (e.g., apply metrics to determine success of the process)

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience (5+ years relevant experience beyond the required years of experience can be substituted in lieu of a bachelor's degree)
  • 7+ years corporate communications experience
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, ability to persuade and build consensus with stakeholders
  • Experience consulting with clients to determine requirements, stakeholders and project scope
  • Experience developing and executing plans; project management experience
  • Experience communicating in multiple media (e.g., print, email, web, video/audio) through multiple channels (e.g., manager-to-employee, employee or leader meetings, web portals, intranet, webinars, social networking platforms)
  • Ability to proactively and quickly recognize and assess external reputational opportunities and issues, effectively communicating both the implications of the issue at hand and a clear path forward to executive stakeholders and team members
  • Experience processing and understanding complex situations and technical subjects, in order to translate them clearly into layperson's terms
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with experience in a matrixed organization, preferrable in health care
  • Experience with multiple tools, including Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and others
  • Experience working with senior executive level clients and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience serving as a spokesperson with news media for a health care organization
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading successful multi-channel engagement campaigns integrating traditional, digital, and social media strategies
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing emerging and urgent issues and crises with significant reputational and business implications, and the ability to develop and implement strategic, effective response plans considering various audiences
  • Ability to prioritize and operate effectively in a highly matrixed, complex business and communications environment, including simultaneously supporting multiple stakeholders and effectively advancing multiple communication priorities
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with communications leaders across multiple businesses in the interest of telling a more integrated, holistic story and protecting and elevating the reputation of the broader enterprise

Colorado Residents Only: The salary/hourly range for Colorado residents is $94,500 to $171,700.
